What To Expect After Varicose And Spider Vein Treatments
- Posted on: Jan 15 2018
Dr. Petropoulos recommends sclerotherapy and laser treatments for varicose and spider veins. These procedures reduce healing times so that you can return to your normal activities much sooner compared to other techniques. Knowing what to expect after the treatment helps you prepare and understand the healing process.
How Will I Feel After Sclerotherapy and Laser Vein Treatment?
The most common symptoms after treatment for varicose and spider veins are discomfort and bruising. You may also feel a slightly tight sensation. The bruising may last up to two weeks, and non-prescription medications help with the discomfort.
What Activities Can I Do After Vein Treatment?
Walking is important after sclerotherapy and laser treatment for veins and may help alleviate the symptoms. The light movement contributes to the routing of blood through healthy veins. With the exception of walking, exercising should be voided for up to ten days. Dr. Petropoulos will explain when you can increase your activity level.
You can return to work the day after the procedure if you feel rested and comfortable. Listen to your body, as it may tell you that more time at home is needed.
Driving and other activities that require you to sit for prolonged time periods should also be considered as you recover from vein treatment. Dr. Petropoulos recommends that you avoid any long-distance driving or traveling for at least 14 days after the procedure.
How Do I Take Care of My Legs After Sclerotherapy and Laser Vein Treatment?
You will wear compression stockings for the first 14 days to help the damaged vein close and to re-route the blood flow. You should only remove the stockings when you bathe. Dr. Petropoulos will let you know if you need to wear the stockings when you sleep.
Patients can cover their legs with a waterproof bandage which will promote healing. You can shower, but should not take a bath or do any other water activity that requires soaking. After your shower, gently pat the bandages and your legs with a soft towel. Avoid using any lotions or products that are not prescribed by Dr. Petropoulos.
