Spider Vein & Varicose Vein Treatments
Hormones, pregnancy, prolonged standing, and genetics are the primary causes of unsightly leg veins. Facial veins can be caused by genetics, sun exposure, and age. Regardless of what brought your veins to light, it’s likely that they are making you self-conscious and want to cover them up with makeup or clothing. Dr. Petropoulos has effective spider vein and varicose vein treatments that have given her Boston, MA patients a restored sense of freedom in clothing choices and renewed self-confidence.
What kind of treatment do you offer for spider veins and Varicose veins?
We offer our patients the following effective vein treatments which are performed as a simple office procedure:
Sclerotherapy
Sclerotherapy, developed over 75 years ago, is the most common, simple, and effective vein treatment. It is typically used to eliminate spider veins and varicose veins on the legs. A sclerosing agent is injected into the unwanted vein with a hair-thin needle, causing irritation to the vein inner walls so that they stick together, eventually collapsing the vein which is then absorbed by the body’s healing process. We usually recommend wearing compression stockings for the first few weeks after treatment to encourage optimal results.

Laser Vein Removal
Facial spider veins and certain leg veins are eliminated by a highly-specialized Sciton® laser treatment – either using the Nd:YAG laser component, the broadband light (BBL) component, or a combination of both, depending on the patient’s needs. Sometime the surface of the skin may appear bruised initially, but this resolves. Most patients need 2 to 5 treatments to eliminate their spider veins. Certain leg veins are best treated with a combination of laser treatments and sclerotherapy.
what can i expect during treatment?
Sclerotherapy and laser vein treatments are usually not painful, but we offer patients a topical anesthetic for enhanced comfort or peace of mind if desired. Often patients combine their vein treatments with other minimally invasive procedures such as laser hair removal. Most patients require multiple treatments for optimal improvements, as well as touch-ups as new veins become visible over time.
